Training
Pre-Requisites (Trades Trainees)
Prior to Attending Skills Assessment (Boot Camp)
- Initial selection & employment is the first step to Apprenticeship and is decided by the Contractor
- Registration with IBEW Local 258
- A minimum of six (6) months industry-related experience as a Trades Trainee
- Completion of the following forms:
- Trades Trainee registration from JLATTC
- PISE Program Waiver
- Industry Training Authority (ITA) Registration
- Completion of the following academics:
- Math 11
- Physics 11
- English 12
- Minimum N + Air Driver’s License
Pre-Requisites (Apprentices)
Minimum Acceptable Prior to Certification as a Journeyman Lineman
- Air + 3 Driver's License
- 3.5 years as an Apprentice
- 5045 work experience hours including the key area minimums, which are:
- 450 hours Live Line experience, of which 300 must be 3 Phase
- 100 hours of Underground
- Three (3) levels of schooling
- Attendance and a passing grade in all technical training
- A passing grade on the Inter-provincial (IP) exam
Preferable, but not mandatory
- 1000 hours of Distribution
- 100 hours of Transmission
Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Those who have successfully completed the Pre-Apprenticeship Program at Kwantlen College are not
required to attend the Skills Assessment (Boot Camp) and may not be required to attend year
one schooling.
The following is to be sent to the JLATTC office:
- A photocopy of their Kwantlen transcript
- Original transcript in a sealed envelope from Kwantlen College
- A minimum of three (3) months industry-related experience as a Trades Trainee
- Completion of the following forms:
- ITA form "prior technical training credit application" (two pages)
- JLATTC Pre-Apprentice Registration
- Industry Training Authority (ITA) Registration
- Completion of the following academics:
- Math 11
- Physics 11
- English 12
- Air + 3 Driver’s License
Schooling
The EITI office is your contact for schooling. They will advise you of school dates, start time, homework, and required textbooks. Direct your questions to the EITI office at 604-590-8911. Homework must be submitted to their office at:

Apprentices are required to attend three (3) levels of technical training.
Years 1 & 2 schooling are 5 weeks in duration
Year 3 schooling is 6 weeks in duration
Pre-Apprenticeship Program graduates, on approval from the ITA, will move forward to complete:
- Two levels of Technical Training
- Year 2 is five (5) weeks in duration
- Year 3 is six (6) weeks in duration
Apprentices shall receive a supplemental wage payment of one hundred dollars ($100.00) per week for each full week in attendance.
Homework is expected, on time, in the EITI office as requested.
WCB mandated safety rules are strictly enforced, including wearing a 4 point chin strap when working above 10 feet.
Apprentices must bring their log book, tools, and safety equipment to school, including but not limited to:
- Hard hat
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Body belt
- Pole strap
- Well-fitting climbers
- Heavy soled boots, long-sleeved shirts,
- Retractable lanyard
- Tool pouch
- Rain gear
Apprentices are responsible for acquiring, and paying for, their own textbooks.
EITI has a supply of the textbooks required for each year, as follows

- Transformation for Line Works 1st Edition
- Electricity One-Seven
- Year Two
- Live Line Work Practices
- Underground Distribution
